Escherized Hexagons

There are three classes of isohedral convex hexagon tilings. The regular hexagon is in all three.

This is number two!

It has two pairs of congruent sides, and three angles that always add to 360 degrees. The tiling has two midpoint 180 degree rotations and a sweet glide reflection.

Producer Very Puzzle recently announced that they will be releasing a new Rubik’s-style puzzle based on the geometry of a truncated icosidodecahedron (see GIF). The VTI (short for Void Truncated Icosidodecahedron) will likely be the one of the largest mass-produced twisty puzzle to date, possibly only eclipsed by the Petaminx. The puzzle features a whopping 62-axis geometry, with every face able to turn (30 squares, 20 hexagons, 12 dodecagons). This nearly doubles the previous record of 32 set by the Tuttminx, also produced by Very Puzzle.

Producer Very Puzzle is releasing a new version of their famously menacing Tuttminx puzzle. The Tuttminx is a Rubik’s-style puzzle based on the geometry of a truncated icosahedron that I have previously posted about here. All 32 faces are fully functional. From a solving perspective, the three are identical. The new version has slightly deeper curved cuts than version 2 (right). The original Tuttminx (version 1, left) has straight cuts. The new version is an attempt to correct an unintended feature of earlier versions: fudging. 

Fudging refers to moves that are not intended / expected from the geometry of the puzzle but possible due to the tolerance of the physical puzzle. In the case of the Tuttminx, a hexagonal face is intended to only turn 120 degrees rather than 60, as the two edge types are not identical (hexagon-hexagon edge pieces are slightly fatter than hexagon-pentagon edges). Turning a hexagonal face 60 degrees and then turning an adjacent pentagonal face results in a mixing of the two edge types. Due the slight wiggle room necessary for the puzzle to function, this move can actually be done, though the puzzle becomes much tighter and more difficult to turn. 

Very Puzzle also produced a Void Tuttminx that features a hollow center. Finally, there is a version called the Superstarthat is based on the same geometry but eliminates all corner pieces to create a star-like face pattern similar to that of Alexander’s Star for dodecahedral geometry.

The price is expected to be in the $55-65 range.
